About 15 percent of people are affected by migraine headaches. Migraine headaches are neurological disorders and can vary from moderate to severe.
Most often, only one half of the head is affected and the headache is perceived as โpoundingโ or โpulsatingโ in nature. Migraine headaches can last anywhere from two to 72 hours.
The main symptoms of a migraine headache are moderate to severe pain in the head and neck area. Secondary symptoms commonly include:
- moderate to severe pain in the head and neck area
- nausea
- vomiting
- sensitivity to light, sound or smell
Symptoms are usually exacerbated by physical activity. Migraines can be due to a combination of environmental and genetic factors. About two-thirds of migraine sufferers have family members who also suffer from migraines.
